POET STREET

Poet Street is a fresh, Melbourne-based nine piece jazz ensemble, with almost all members currently in their first year of a music degree. They have already studied with a host of who’s who in the Melbourne jazz scene and are influenced by Alice Coltrane, Esperanza Spalding, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins amongst others. Having performed on YouYube during lockdown, Poet Street make their live debut as part of the MWIJF 2020.

Sophia Basile: Trumpet 

Sophia is studying Jazz and Improvisation at VCA. She has participated in the Girls Do Jazz workshop series led by Andrea Keller and performed in the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival (2018/2019). She has worked with Steve and Mal Sedergreen in the Jazz and Improvisation group at Melbourne Youth Orchestra’s Summer School (2018/2019). As a member of the St Columba’s College Big Band, Sophia has performed at a variety of festivals including Generations In Jazz, Essentially Ellington Down Under, and the Mordialloc Big Band Sunsets Festival. Sophia also played in the St Columba’s Rock Band, organising performances in the local community and working with other students to write and record original pop and rock songs. 

Isabella Bradbeer: Voice 

Isabella is a recent high school graduate from country Victoria and now studies Jazz and Improvisation at VCA. Throughout her secondary schooling she was involved in many musical productions as leads and supporting roles and performed jazz music at a local club and various eisteddfods and festivals, including Generations in Jazz. I sabella has also performed numerous private gigs throughout the past couple of years exploring genres of jazz, R&B/soul, pop and indie/alternative music. She aspires to release her own compositions in the near future and pursue a career in her passion for music. 

Barbara Brady: Drums 

Barbara is a first year student studying Jazz and Improvisation at VCA. She has played in the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Stonnington Jazz Festival, and Eltham Jazz Festival, as a member of the Stonnington Youth Jazz Initiative. Barbara has performed with Australian jazz pianist Bob Sedergreen, and studied under drummers Sonja Horbelt, Allan Browne and Ronny Ferella. In 2019, she recorded an EP with art-rock group Diana’s Foresters. Barbara continues to maintain an interest in classical percussion, performing with the Melbourne University All Staff Orchestra and Victorian Youth Symphony Orchestra. 

Madeline Browne: Tenor Saxophone
Madeline is the founder of Poet Street. As a member of the Siena College Stage Band, she has 

performed in the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival (2018/2019) and placed first in Division 3 at Generations in Jazz (2019). As Siena Music Captain in 2019 she directed the Year 12 school band and assisted the Junior Ensembles. She participated in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra Summer School, working with Steve and Mal Sedergreen, Kelly Santin, Toshi Clinch (2019/2020). Madeline performed at the 2020 Jazz in the Park (Central Hotel Richmond) with the Sedergreen Brothers and John Mackey, and in 2019 had the opportunity to work with Jamie Oehlers through the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival. Studying an Advanced Diploma of Music Industry (Music Performance) at Melbourne Polytechnic, Madeline aspires to become a professional jazz musician. 

Phoebe Clark: Electric Bass 

Phoebe is studying Jazz and Improvisation at the VCA. As a member of Star of the Sea’s College Stage Band, she participated in Generations in Jazz in 2019. In 2016, Phoebe received the Peter Faulkner Scholarship for her school choir and the Meredith Talia Award for Best Accompanist at Star of the Sea Music Festival 2018 and 2019. She has performed at Hamer Hall, the Plenary and Iwaki Auditorium. Over several years Phoebe has participated in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra’s Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Orchestra 

Summer School programs. Awarded Star of the Sea Music dux for 2019, Phoebe received a scholarship for Melbourne Uni, as well as receiving an invitation to perform at Top Class Music in March 2020. 

Alisha Karunagaran: Guitar 

Alisha is studying Jazz and Improvisation at VCA. She is an independent artist, who also plays piano and sings. Alisha has been exposed to various performance opportunities through her highschool in Sydney, including performing her own compositions in front of thousands of people and playing guitar for the musical “Strictly Ballroom”. She is highly invested in all areas of the arts, and hopes to become a professional musician, performing her own compositions around the world, for the rest of her life. 

Genevieve Kuner: Alto Saxophone 

Genevieve is studying Jazz and Improvisation at Melbourne University. She is an enthusiastic saxophonist who has studied under the guidance of Emily Tarrant and Chris Paraha at Genazzano FCJ College. For many years Genevieve participated in Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony and Melbourne Youth Orchestra Summer School. She has attended workshops at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and attended the Melbourne Saxophone Summer Academy where she worked with local and international artists including Joseph Lallo, Jamie Oehlers, Remco Keijzer and Niels Bijl. She has performed at Generations in Jazz over a number of years and at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Another highlight for her, was performing with the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra as the Young Soloist of the Month. Genevieve is passionate about increasing the profile of women in jazz and is excited to be a member of Poet Street. 

Chanel Langdon: Baritone Saxophone 

Chanel is studying Jazz and Improvisation at VCA. As a member of the St Helena Secondary College Stage Band, she attended Generations in Jazz in 2018, and in 2019, was selected for the division 2 Super Band on baritone saxophone and performed in front of 6000 people. Chanel has participated in the Eltham Jazz Festival and Warrandyte Festival in 2018/19. Chanel has also participated in the Australian Jazz Museums under 25’s workshops. Through this program she was a member of the band ‘Jazz Running Wild’ and played at various RSL Clubs, jazz clubs and retirement villages. In December of 2019 ‘Jazz Running Wild’ performed at the 74th Australian Jazz Convention in Albury. 

Summer Nguyen: Piano 

Summer is studying Bachelor of Commerce and Finance at Monash while working on her AMus. She grew up with a classical music background in piano and also plays the guitar. At Suzzanne Cory High School, she was the guitarist in a rock band for the iconic “We Will Rock You” musical and the music captain. In 2019 and 2020, she was a participant in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra’s Summer School Big Band Program, and had the opportunity to work with various guest artists as well as musicians in the jazz and improvisation group. Summer endeavours to continue performing both classical and jazz music in the future.
