Dylan van der Schyff: Drum Kit and Percussion
Gen Kuner is a Melbourne/Naarm-based saxophonist, improviser and composer who explores extended techniques and intricate soundscapes. She delves into the art of improvisation, often blending semi-composed pieces with unconventional playing methods. Her creative process revolves around trusting her fellow musicians and embracing the fluidity of spontaneous creation.
Gen’s debut project with her trio, featuring Andrew Saragossi and Dylan van der Schyff, highlights her unique compositional voice and improvisational approach. Since recording her Honours project It’s All About Trust, in 2023 at the Brian Brown Studio – where she explored the relationship between improvisation, extended techniques, and trust – the trio is now working on another project, set to be released next year.

Melbourne Amplified Strings and Louisa Rankin debut their exciting new collaboration, Renew, to close this year’s MWIJF. Featuring Louisa Rankin (vocals), Xani Kolac (violin), Anita Quayle (cello), Fran Swinn (electric guitar), and Sam Anning (double bass), they’re unlocking the vault to breathe new life into past works, reimagining them with inimitable vitality for this ensemble line-up.
MAS - Melbourne Amplified Strings (MAS) began in early 2018 by 2 incredibly influential instrumentalists and composers from Melbourne’s music scene, violinist Xani Kolac and cellist Anita Quayle. Their vision is simple….. to reinvent and reinvigorate the way traditional classical instruments are heard, by blending and utilising effects and live looping into originally composed and improvised musical material.
Their debut performance saw them join forces with RnB singer Thando, to a sell out show at Chapel off Chapel, where they arranged many of Thando’s original tunes for voice, string trio and effects. Since then they have been surprising audiences with their carefully curated one off concert experiences in unique locations throughout Melbourne, joining forces with special guest artists such as pianists Andrea Keller and Nat Bartsch, Wiradjuri soprano Shauntai Batzke, cellist Richard Vaudrey, and Music Victoria’s Musician of the year for 2021, guzheng instrumentalist Mindy Meng Wang.

LRT - In this latest incarnation as a bandleader, vocalist Louisa Rankin has invited longtime collaborators and two of Australia’s finest improvising musicians guitarist Fran Swinn and double bassist Sam Anning to work in a drummer-less trio format. Bringing an instrumental perspective to collective music-making, Louisa's approach to writing for and singing within an improvising ensemble calls for adventurous musical interaction and inspires a bold approach to improvisation. Often wordless, Louisa's songs provide a vehicle with which to explore the unique qualities of her voice, transcending the written narrative to express deep and visceral emotions with vulnerability, strength and tenderness. An emerging composer on the Australian jazz landscape Louisa's music can excite, challenge and delight listeners as she creates a unique sound-world to express both wistful musings and her deepest thoughts.
