Bitches Brew
Bitches Brew is carnival of young-ish souls brimming with some old time music, already setting stages a-light.
Bitches Brew has been cooked up by trombonist/ vocalist Lisa Baird. The Melbourne veteran (Lily & King, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Lloyd Spiegel) has married some sensuous and oh-so-soulful original blues & roots compositions to a crack force of badass instrumental compadres, to birth a brand new force in Melbourne’s live music scene.
Complemented by drummer Chelsea Allen (Great Aunt, Paris Plan), guitarist Stella Anning (SAT, Push Portal), bassist Sarah Holmes (Thando, SPIRE) and saxophonist Cheryl Durongpisitkul (Koi Kingdom, Australian Art Orchestra) Bitches Brew fuses deep blues and roots undercurrents with hip-hop and jazz elements, to bring audiences riveting, ecstatic performances.
A sinewy, propulsive, infectious ensemble as at home on daylight festival stages as the dark candle-lit corner of some ill reputed speakeasy during Prohibition, Bitches Brew sizzle with sharp-witted lyricism, fire and fury, while laying down an archetypal lesson in A Good Time.
They are as music is to medicine; rich food for the soul, as love is to laughter and the wailin’ horn is to the whoopin’ holler; thumbing basses and smiling faces; when the brew hits the cauldron, this is one kitchen you want to be in.

Mia Barham is an emerging improvising musician currently studying Jazz and Improvisation at Monash University. She performs regularly around Melbourne, performing with musicians such as Tony Gould, Dick Oatts and Kristin Berardi. She began music when she was 8 years old, picking up flute as she had loved how it sounded when someone had played it in the school assembly. After picking up saxophone later on in high school, she fell in love with music’s unique ability to create connections and share stories amongst new and old friends. As an improvising musician she has performed in online recording projects with Dave Douglas and Ingrid Jenson and performs regularly with The Paris Cat Big Band, The Minnie Big Band, the Jazzlab Orchestra and the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra. She was offered a place in the highly competitive Creative Music Intensive run by the Australian Art Orchestra and has regularly performed as part of Rob Bourke’s Jazz Gathering at the Southside Jazz Club. She was awarded the Jazz Music Scholarship on entry to Monash University and has been fortunate enough to be mentored by some of Australia’s leading jazz musicians such as Paul Williamson, Angela Davis and Rob Bourke. Mia’s music is humble and open, taking inspiration from musicians such as Ian Clarke, Bon Iver and Andrea Keller. She is an emerging artist who has an infectious passion for music, wearing her heart on her sleeve in every performance.
