It all started when…

MWIJF & Monash University Gender diverse leadership workshops

An initiate of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance, Monash University, the Gender Diverse Leadership Program in Jazz and Improvisation provides a safe and informal environment for students to make music together, cultivate networks and communities, and address specific challenges that commonly arise in the lives of female identifying, non-binary, and gender diverse musicians in jazz and improvisation. Through building the knowledge and skills of women, non-binary, and gender-diverse practitioners, and providing models of positive supportive practice, we aim to foster the next generation of participation and leadership in Australian jazz and improvisation.

As part of this program and the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, a FREE workshop will be run focussing on composition and performance.  The workshop is open to current secondary and tertiary music students, and participants are encouraged to bring their instruments!

·       The Jazzlab: 27 Leslie St, Brunswick VIC 3056

Nat Bartsch is a twice ARIA-nominated Australian pianist and composer known for her ethereal, meditative, lyrical music. She has released eight albums, toured domestically and internationally, and recently established her own record label, Amica Records, which includes Amica Familia, a home for mentoring and industry skills development for emerging artists.

Her ethereal, lyrical music deftly traverses the space between classical, jazz, post-rock and children’s music – creating a space for the listener to be in the moment and feel emotion. Addressing universal themes from her own, intimate perspective, Nat’s music is enjoyed by a broad audience - often in profoundly personal moments.
Nat has received the 2023 Art Music Award for Jazz Work of the Year, the Melbourne Prize for Music development award, two ARIA nominations (in jazz and classical categories), AIR, Music Victoria and Bell Award nominations. She holds a degree in jazz improvisation and a Masters in classical composition from the University of Melbourne. This year, Nat is Artist-in-Residence at Melbourne Recital Centre. Nat has composed commissions for artists including Grigoryan Brothers, Plexus and Inventi Ensemble, and collaborated with Hush Foundation, Luke Howard, Vince Pope and Back to Back Theatre. Nat is an AMC Associate, a Yamaha artist, and represented by Cabin Artists (EU/UK) and Tom Ohsawa (Japan). She is proudly neurodivergent, and a mentor to emerging artists.
