Opening set: Mia in Motion
Mia in Motion is a newly formed jazz group, featuring fresh renditions of standards as well as oddly satisfying and fun compositions arranged and written by drummer Mia Rowland. Originally assembling for Mia’s final recital at Monash University, the sextet has brought together old and new combinations of players, who have collectively found an exciting energy and inspiring vision for new works. As a drummer, Mia’s writing process is consistently navigated by ear and defies typical progressions and harmonies, which often cause an element of light dissonance. This, in hand with her natural tendency towards odd times and whacky melodies, is ultimately balanced out by her impulse for a good time through catchy and groovy tunes. The group is extremely thrilled to have the opportunity to perform their unique works and share their lively and intriguing energy alongside jazz greats and in front of fellow jazz enthusiasts, as part of the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival.
